Day Visitors

Spend the day exploring the woodlands and the edges of Bangweulu’s wetland areas.

Bangweulu in a Day

The park is open from 05h00 to 18h00 for day visitors. Enjoy a self-drive, taking in the fabulous birdlife, or take advantage of one of the activities that are available in this part of the Game Management Area, including community visits. Guided game drives and guided walks can be booked in advance.

Just a short flight from the Luangwa Valley, Bangweulu makes an ideal day trip for those on a big game safari in the area, who are curious to see something different.

Note: Access conditions change over time and any traveller to Bangweulu is advised to contact staff at Nkondo headquarters to get an update on prevailing conditions before departure.

Please be aware that if you are driving to the GMA you will pass through several villages. Rather than distributing goods to children, please chat to us about donating educational materials through one of our community engagement programmes.

Game Drives

Game drives in the early morning or late afternoon can be booked on a 9-seater game viewer, led by a qualified guide who hails from the community.

Self-Drive through Bangweulu

The park is open from 05h00 to 18h00 for day visitors through Nkondo or Tidzibane Gate. 4×4 vehicles with high clearance are required.

Guided Walks

Take a walk from camp, either across the floodplains or in the shade of the miombo woodlands with a guide to understand the wealth of this ecosystem.

Shoebill Experience

Bangweulu is one of the best places to view the rare shoebill. Take a half-day or day trip to view this endangered species in its natural habitat.

Boat or Mokoro in the Wetlands

Mokoro/boat trips are a great way to get into the swamp and see exquisite birdlife, alongside carefully constructed fishing camps and the reality of life in the swamps.

Shoebill “Show and Tell”

Take a guided tour of the Shoebill Rescue Facility, one of the most original conservation efforts that aims to increase the population of this intriguing bird.

Specialised Birding

Bangweulu, particularly in the wet season, is a bird lover’s paradise and not just for the shoebill but for a number of special endemics such as the blue-breasted bee-eater.
